Work on Monument Progressing

Work on the beautiful Confederate monument being erected on court square under the auspices of the Varina Jefferson Davis Chapter of this city is progressing nicely and the contractors expect to have everything in readiness and in apple pie order for the unveiling ceremony on the morning of October the ninth. They had a little accident Monday morning when one of the big stones slipped and fell and broke half in two, but luckily there were two extra pieces like this one in the yards of the Marble Works at Columbus and they had one shipped over.

The monument will be a beautiful structure of solid marble. It will be about forty feet in height and weigh many tons. The largest single piece of marble weighs a little over eleven tons, there are two other pieces that weigh about eight tons each and a number of smaller ones that weigh two and three tons.

This monument, which is erected to the memory of the dead and in honor of the living heroes of the war, both men and women of Leflore County, cost upward of $6500, of this sum, $5,000 has been given by the county through the board of Supervisors. The remainder will be raised by public subscriptions.

The monument is being erected by the Columbus Marble Works of Columbus, Mississippi.
